How to Install Unreal Engine | Text and video training

Installing Unreal Engine 5.7.4

There are two different methods for installing Unreal Engine. In this guide, we’ll walk you through both so you can choose the one that best suits your workflow.

Method 1: Direct Download

1: Create an Epic Games Account
As you may know, Unreal Engine is developed by Epic Games. To get started, you’ll need to create a free Epic Games account.
Click here to sign up or simply create your account through the Epic Games Launcher. To download the Epic Games Launcher, click here.

  1. Click the Download button located at the top-right corner of the page.

Fill in all required fields marked with an asterisk (*) to complete your registration.

2: Install and Run the Epic Games Launcher

Once the launcher is installed, it may prompt you to download some update data. Allow the update to complete.

After installation is finished, log in or sign up using your Epic Games account.

Once you’re logged in, you’ll be redirected to the launcher interface.
Now, simply click on the Unreal Engine tab as shown below to continue.

Steps to Download Unreal Engine

4:Important Installation Settings

After clicking Install, a window like the one below will appear. Click on Browse to choose your preferred installation path for Unreal Engine.

Make sure the installation path is not too long. You can install Unreal Engine on any drive, but we strongly recommend using an SSD drive with high speed and enough free space.
If your C drive has sufficient capacity, it’s a great choice for installation. Ideally, leave at least 100 GB of free space—around 40 GB for the engine itself and 60 GB for possible cache and project files.

Once you’ve selected the installation path, click on Options to continue.

Unreal Engine Download Settings

After clicking on Options, you’ll see a window like the one below.
To save download time and disk space, it’s best to uncheck unnecessary components.

The only essential component required to install Unreal Engine is Core Components.
However, I recommend keeping “Templates and Feature Packs” and “Engine Source” unchecked for a faster and lighter installation.

Starter Content is not critical — it includes a small number of materials, meshes, particles, etc., and most of them are of basic quality.
If you need it later, you can always come back to this section after installation, enable it again to download, or disable it to remove it.

In the Target Platforms section, uncheck all platforms unless you’re sure you’ll be using them.
You can always install or remove them later based on your project needs.

Once you’re done, click Apply to begin the download process.

Essential Options for Installing Unreal Engine 5

After the download completes, the Launch button will appear as shown below. Clicking this button will start Unreal Engine.

Launching Unreal Engine

5: Post-Installation Settings for Unreal Engine

After installing Unreal Engine, open the Epic Games Launcher and go to the Library tab. Click the dropdown arrow next to the Launch button of your installed version to access the following options:

  • Options: Access the settings mentioned above.

  • Set Current: If you have multiple versions installed, use this option to set one as the default version.

  • Create Shortcut: Adds a shortcut for this version to your desktop, allowing you to launch Unreal Engine without opening the Epic Games Launcher.

  • Remove: Completely uninstall the selected version.

  • Verify: Reinstalls the engine files without downloading again to fix any corrupted or missing files.

Method 2: Offline Installation

This method is useful if you have already downloaded the Unreal Engine installer files or if you want to change the installation directory.

First, install the Epic Games Launcher and log in, just like in Method 1. Then, go to the Options and click Install. Let the launcher download about 100 MB of data, and then click the Cancel button as shown in the image below. The status will change from Installing to Resume.

click on the * icon to proceed.

Now, download the Unreal Engine files from the bottom of this page. After downloading, extract the files; the extracted folder will be named something like UE_5.5 or the version you downloaded. Simply move this folder to your Unreal Engine installation directory.

Default installation path:
C:\Program Files\Epic Games

Once you’ve placed the folder in the installation path, return to the Epic Games Launcher and click the Resume button. The launcher will skip the download phase and complete the installation correctly.

Changing Unreal Engine Project Cache Files Location

If you’ve worked with Unreal Engine before, you might have noticed your C drive filling up and wondered why. The main reason is the cache data from your Unreal Engine projects. These cache files can take up tens or even hundreds of gigabytes, especially if you have old projects you no longer use.

Unreal Engine 5.5 introduces a system called Zen, which helps automatically clean up old cache data you haven’t used in a while. However, we recommend managing your cache files manually for better control and optimization.

If you downloaded the Unreal Engine files from our site, simply navigate to the following path and extract the file BaseEngine_E.zip. Make sure Unreal Engine is closed during extraction.

If you downloaded Unreal Engine directly from Epic Games, download the zip file at the bottom of this page and extract it to this path:
C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_5.5\Engine\Config

All the downloaded files should remain together without renaming. Simply right-click on the .zip file and choose Extract to proceed.
